After that we walked around Cooperstown and then had dinner at the Blue Mingo Cafe. Great food right on the water.

We didn’t have time to visit the Farmer’s Museum, the Fenimore Art Museum, the Baseball Hall of Fame, or the interesting shops in Cooperstown.

I think the great thing about Mariaville Lake B&B is our location. We may not be in a resort town, but there are so many road trips you could take and come back to the peace and quiet at the end of the day. September is a particularly beautiful time to visit, and we do have rooms open here and there. Give us a call and we’ll help you plan your trip.

As the weather gets a little cooler, I am heading back into the woods. Just walking distance from the B&B is our famous beaver dam, the biggest we’ve ever seen. If you go at dusk you can often spot a beaver swimming and flapping his big tail. Rick is often available to lead a “Night Walk.” I don’t want to give away all his secrets, but it is amazing and informative. It’s just $35, worth every penny. Bring some walking shoes if you plan to partake.

Five miles down the road is the Plotterkill Preserve. It is especially nice in the spring when the water falls are running at full capacity but the gorge is always pretty cool. The trails are well maintained and you can hike as long or as little as you’d like.

Further afield is John Boyd Thacher State Park. Home to one of the richest fossil bearing formations in the world, its limestone cliffs afford spectacular views of the Hudson and Mohawk Valleys and on a clear day you can see the Green and Adirondack Mountains.

Well, that’s only 3 places but I’m getting a blister on my foot from all that hiking. Time to sit on the dock with a glass of wine and watch the sunset.
